How I Went Vegan: My Personal Journey
It all started one day in November when my partner and I watched the documentary Super Size Me — you know, the one where the guy eats McDonald’s for a month straight. What really blew my mind wasn’t even the documentary itself, but the extras at the end. Seeing how the fries and burgers didn’t decompose or took an extremely long time. That really stuck with me.
The following week, I had an appointment with my chiropractor, and we somehow got onto the topic of that documentary. He told me I had to watch another DVD he had called Eating. He explained a little about it but didn’t want to give too much away, insisting I just watch it. I was skeptical, and honestly, it took me a couple of weeks before I finally decided to do it.
When I did sit down to watch it, I watched it alone. I was expecting it to be about slaughterhouses or something similar. Instead, it was nothing like what I imagined. I was completely enthralled and honestly felt like I had been brainwashed my entire life. It changed me. I won’t go into detail about the documentary itself, other than to say it motivates people to adopt a whole-food, plant-based diet.
I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I asked my partner to watch it with me. He was just as interested as I was, and together we decided to go vegetarian starting January 1st.
For me, the transition was surprisingly easy. At the time, there weren’t many vegetarian alternatives for meat or chicken, but I made it work—and I actually enjoyed it. I quickly realized that I didn’t miss meat or chicken at all. Initially, my reasons were health-based, but over the years I began learning more about what happens to animals, and my mindset slowly started to shift.
Even while I was vegetarian, I switched to vegan dairy alternatives—except for cheese. I loved cheese and ate it several times a week. Over the 14 years I was vegetarian, I tried several vegan cheeses many times, and honestly… it was horrible. Then one day, I finally found a vegan cheese I loved. It was handmade locally and extremely expensive, which forced me to change my mindset. Cheese became a treat—something to enjoy occasionally, not multiple times a week.
That was all it took.
On January 1, 2019, I finally went VEGAN.
I’m incredibly proud of myself for making the transition and have never looked back. That said, I’m also very honest about how I eat. I still enjoy “junk food” like chips, burgers, fries, chocolate, and more. This blog is for all kinds of food. Some of what I review may be healthy, and some may not. I want to be honest and transparent with my readers—this is my life, my journey, and my choice, and I’m completely okay with that.
